BRONZE BATTLE-AXE
Budapest, I. district, Fő street

As a consequence of the tighter cultural and trade relations in the Middle Bronze Age, the products from the metal workshops centred in the Transilvanian Tisza region also appeared around the capital. One of the characteristic products of the Eastern-Hungarian centre is the axe shown here. During the second part of the Middle Bronze Age, the number of weapons placed in graves increased, and relief-like weapon pictures appeared on the side of pots. These phenomena may be related to the consolidation of an armed class who supported the power of the elite.
