FLAKED STONE TOOLS

Érd

A c. 50,000-year-old hunting settlement discovered on the plateau of Érd in a 3-meter deep depression can also be connected to the Neanderthal man. Besides the bones of animals hunted by the Neanderthal man, there was a great amount of flaked stone tools discovered at the site. The artefacts (mostly different scrapers) were made of larger size pebble stones, mostly quartzite, by a special method. This tool making method is connected to the stone-craft of the Charentien culture, which was prevalent in the Mediterranean stretch of Europe, in the foothills of the Alps, and in the Northern Balkans.
