POT WITH A SQUARE OPENING

Budapest - Békásmegyer

.

Pots with square opening belong to the rare pot types of the Stone Age, and of the Neolithic. Even though there have been different assumptions put forward, so far we do not know the function of the pots for certain. The side of this pot is decorated with engraved lines running horizontally around the pot, and its rim is decorated with a so-called running dog motif. The other speciality of the pot besides its form is that despite having been found at the border of Budapest, it was not made here: the decorations suggest that it was made where the Bükk culture in the Northeast of Hungary existed. Trade relations were very active between the people of the Middle Neolithic, which is unambiguously proved by foreign objects found on their settlements. This pot from Békásmegyer is one of these objects.
