PAINTED ZSELIZ POT

Budapest - Békásmegyer

By the end of the Middle Neolithic, pottery made great improvements mostly due to the remarkable advancement in baking techniques. There is no trace of the thick, robustly formed pots of the early period. The often porcelain-thin surface of the pots was carefully burnished and engraved, and the engraved patterns painted in bands. The nicest pots could have been individual pieces made specifically for certain occasions, probably for the purpose of a religious ceremony. One nice example is this spherical pot that is a product of the Zseliz culture.
