The Magic of Aquincum. The afterlife of a Roman town
temporary exhibition in the BTM Palace Museum Graphics Gallery
April 10, 1992- July 17, 1992

Few people realize that Antique settlements have not only been studied by archaeologists and historians but have also offered subjects for artists over the centuries. Now, the afterlife of the town comes to life from a different point of view, the perspective of the artist seen through the eyes of past artists in historical museum material. The lines of Árpád Tóth, Lajos Áprily's poems, Zoltán Jékely's drama exemplify this path.
The first phase of a valuable work of collection is offered to our visitors. Hopefully the exhibition will provide inspiration for new additions to be made to this collection of work. These object show exactly the effect of this small island of Antique culture surrounded by modern housing estates on individuals from the end of the 19th century to the present day

Roman Ceramic Crafts in Aquincum
Temporary Exhibition, in BTM Palace Museum
August 11, 1992 - February 1993

The exhibition is designed in connection to the scientific papers delivered at the conference in ceramics, to provide an overall view to Hungarian and foreign experts of the excavation material which is only partly available from publications. Several workshops and kilns have come to light in recent excavations.
The introduction to the excavation consists of a short discussion of the quality of Roman Imperial ceramic production. Decorative motifs characteristic of the period and preparatory techniques needed for mass production were also on display. The middle part of the exhibition was designed especially for especially interested visitors or professionals. To date we know of ceramic workshops in Aquincum. Of these, material from 9 of the largest were presented in chronological order. Finally, there is a diorama-like display in which the wide variety of ceramics produced and used in a broad range of activities in Aquincum is presented. The ceramic objects are placed in their original context: in the domestic, architectural, religious spheres as well their use in hostelries.
