The Best Finds from the 1998 Excavation Season
Temporary exhibition, BTM Aquincum Museum, Museum building
April 15, 1999 - October 31

Thanks to an ever increasing number of development projects, the preliminary excavation, test trenches as well as the rescue excavations and observation carried out in parallel to building work increased in 1998 to 23 in number.
On display here are artifacts from both cemeteries and settlements. Although settlement structure and material from excavations at individual buildings, or parts of buildings generally belong to the less showy parts of archaeology, they provide, never the less, essential information to the excavator. Most of the showier objects come from excavations at cemeteries. The glass vessels, fragrance bottles, oil lamps, gold, silver and jet jewelry are hidden in burials as parts of the dress of the deceased or as part of the goods intended for the trip to the other world.
In 1998, sections of cemeteries from different periods came to light at Corvin Square, along Bécsi Road, on Farkastorki Street, on Vályog Street, on Záhony Street and at the Óbuda Gas factory. A small separate burial ground of a villa farm came to light as well on Szõlõkert Street.

Emperors' Portraits from Aquincum
Temporary exhibition, BTM Buda Palace Museum
May 11 - July 6, 1999

Following Graz (Austria), Veszprém (Hungary), Bonn (Germany), Celje (Slovenia) and Maastricht (Holland) the Budapest History Museum was given the honor of holding the International Colloquium on Problems of Provincial Roman Art. This decision was made primarily because of The Budapest History Museum's Roman lapidarium, well known in professional circles for its historical and artistic value.
In honor of the colloquium, the Budapest History Museum presented an exhibition entitled Emperors' Portraits from Aquincum. The monuments on display here - close to 50 pieces in number - have never been shown together in this way. This deficiency has now been corrected by the Museum on the occasion of the International Conference.
