The Budapest History Museum’s Aquincum Museum (mainained by the Municipality of Budapest) received the award for “MUSEUM OF THE YEAR 2012” in recognition of the growing number of events and the enhancement of the museum’s professional and educational profile through well-planned and successfully-implemented grant applications.

Benedictine Archabbey of Pannonhalma received the award for the exhibition of the year.

Further awards were presented to the Tiszazug Geographical Museum (Tiszaföldvár) and the Zemplén Museum (Szerencs). Congratulations on their success!

The awards were presented during the May Festival of Museums on 11 May 2013 at the Hungarian National Museum.

For over 15 years now, the Pulszky Society – Hungarian Museum Association releases a call for applications annually for the prestigious Museum of the Year award. In 2012, seven institutions submitted their applications. The prize is awarded based on the comprehensive evaluation of the operation of the competing museums.

As stated in the call for applications, in order to determine exceptional success, judges compare the museums’ achievements in the year of application with their performance in recent years. Following practices developed over the years, the panel of judges base their decision both on materials submitted by the competing museums and on their findings during visits to the institutions.

This year, too, the panel was composed of the delegates of the Pulszky Society and co-sponsors of the award (the Hungarian National Committee of the International Council of Museum (ICOM), the National Association of Public Collections, the Association of Hungarian Rural Museums, the Hungarian National Museum, and the Public Collections Council of the National Cultural Fund). (The judges were: Ibolya Bereczki, Miklós Cseri, Péter Deme, Zsófia Demeter, Csilla E. Csorba, Gabriella Kesik, István Matskási, Judit N. Kósa, Márta Zomborka).
